International Tourist Guides’ Day 2016

International Tourist Guides’ Day is held on the 21st February each year. Celebrations were held for the first time in 1990 by the World Federation of Tourist Guide Associations (WFTGA) at which time only 15 countries around the world participated and jointly celebrated this special day. Over the years, awareness about this day has grown and to date, more than 70 countries celebrate this event worldwide.
 
In South Africa, this day is celebrated with activities and s ranging from presentations, motivational talks, excursions and workshops. The Department of Tourism  will co-host the 2016 event with the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA) and the South African National Parks (s). The two- day event will take place at Skukuza, Kruger National Park (Nombolo Mdlhuli Conference Centre) from 18-19 February 2016.

The proposed theme for the conference is “Building a Successful and Sustainable Tourist Guiding sector”.

The event provides a platform:

  • to showcase tourist guiding in South Africa by making the industry and the general public aware of tourist guiding profession; and
  • for tourist guides, tourism stakeholders, government departments and tourism authorities involved in tourist guiding to engage and share information on important developments and challenges in the tourist guiding sector.

Some of the topics that will be covered at the workshop include:

  • Overview of Adventure Tourism in South Africa.
  • Consumer Immersion.
  • Adventure Tourism – an Industry Perspective.
  • Exploring Adventure within the Natural and Cultural context.
  • Green Economy and Climate Change.
  • Beyond Minimum Requirements.
