 Department Programme Graduations

​The Department of Tourism will host a number of graduations in November and December 2022 as various departmental programmes will award successful learners and students with certificates. 

 

Sommelier / Wine Service Training Programme Graduations


This is a one-year programme targeting 252 unemployed youth in the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, and aims to upskill and ensure employability within the hospitality and wine industry. The programme commenced in November 2021 and is implemented in KwaZulu-Natal and Western Cape and entails 30% theory and 70% workplace experiential training. 

 

Graduates will receive certificates for skills programme in Wine Service accredited by Culture, Art, Tourism, Hospitality and Sports sector education and Training Authority and the Sommelier Academy.  Collaborative partnerships with industry stakeholders offering in-house practical training for learners has contributed to the success of the initiative. 

 

The graduations will award 88 KZN learners with certificates in Durban on 10 November 2022 and 139 WC learners in Cape Town on 24 November 2022. For more information on this departmental programme or the graduations, contact Mr Tebogo Palai at tpalai@tourism.gov.za

 

Executive Development Programme 


The Executive Development Programme capacitates black women managers with an NQF Level 8 qualification to address the lack of senior female leaders in the tourism industry. 

 

It was implemented over five years from the 2016/17 to the 2021/22 financial year with a total of 120 black women trained and 88 passed and graduated. Since the start of this programme, it recorded 15 national promotions to senior positions, one international promotion to an executive position and one student opened and registered a business in the hospitality sector. 

 

The graduation ceremony for the 2019 and 2021 intakes will take place at the Unisa main campus in Pretoria on 24 November 2022.

Chefs / Professional Cookery Graduations


This was a one-year programme targeting unemployed youth in the Free State (120) and Northern Cape (60) provinces and aims to upskill and ensure employability within the hospitality industry.  

 

This programme commenced in 2021 and was only implemented in Free State and Northern Cape provinces. The programme entails 30% theory and 70% workplace experiential training with graduates receiving a National Certificate in Professional Cookery accredited by Culture, Art, Tourism, Hospitality and Sports sector education and Training Authority (Cathsseta). Collaborative partnerships with industry stakeholders offering in-house practical training for learners has contributed to the success of the initiative. 

 

The graduations will award 110 Free State learners with certificates in Bloemfontein on 1 December 2022 and 41 Northern Cape learners in Kimberly on 6 December 2022. For more information on this departmental programme or the graduations, contact Ms Meriam Mudau at mmudau@tourism.gov.za 

 

Food and Beverages Services


This was a one-year programme targeting 340 unemployed youth in the Eastern Cape (100), Western Cape (140) and Northern Cape (100) and aims to upskill and ensure employability within the hospitality industry. 

 

This programme entails 30% theory and 70% workplace experiential training with graduates receiving a National Certificate in Food and Beverages accredited by the Culture, Art, Tourism, Hospitality and Sports sector education and Training Authority (Cathsseta). Collaborative partnerships with industry stakeholders offering in-house practical training for learners has contributed to the success of the initiative.
