Tourism Month 2020

 Tourism Month 2020

Tourism Month is celebrated in September to highlight the country’s diverse tourism offerings, and the sector’s significant contribution to the country’s economy.

Inspired by the annual United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) World Tourism Day celebrations on 27 September, Tourism Month provides a platform for the South African sector to reflect and commemorate its milestones in relation to the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.

The 2020 UNWTO theme for World Tourism Day Celebrations is: “Tourism and Rural Development.” The theme links with Outcome 4 and 7 of Government’s Programme of Action that seeks to create decent employment through inclusive economic growth, and develop vibrant, equitable and sustainable rural communities that contribute to food security for all.

Tourism Month festivities will be held throughout the country, culminating with the World Tourism Day celebrations that will be hosted in collaboration with SA Tourism and the Gauteng Province at the Maropeng, Cradle of Humankind in Johannesburg on 27 September 2020.

Our Tourism Month festivities take place as the sector re-opens at the backdrop of the Covid-19 pandemic - which has had a crippling impact on business. However, the sector has established Health and Safety Protocols in line with global guidelines, to minimise the risk of transmission. South Africans are encouraged to travel and explore their wonderful country, and help revive the sector.
