Minister Sisulu welcomes MEC Siboniso Duma to the Tourism sector

Minister of Tourism, Lindiwe Sisulu, has congratulated MEC Siboniso Duma on his appointment as MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environment. The tourism sector in KwaZulu Natal has suffered serious challenges over the past two years, and coupled with his experience in the legislature, MEC Duma brings new energy to the portfolio.

Since the July 2021 instability in KwaZulu Natal and Gauteng, which was broadcast across global media, many potential tourists have expressed concerns about safety and security in South Africa, and KZN in particular.

Further, the recent devestating floods experienced in KZN damaged road infrastructure, tourism sites and hospitality establishments, costing the tourism industry millions in revenue and hundreds of jobs.

These events have weakened confidence in the KZN tourism sector, and work must be done to rebuild the sector and bring visitors back to this popular destination.

According to Sisulu, with his experience as Chairperson of the Transport committee of the KZN legislature, MEC Duma will also provide leadership in resolving various issues faced by tourism operators in this area.

“I look forward to working with MEC Duma to stabilise and support sustainable tourism and the economy of the province as we reform and grow this critical industry”, said the Minister.
