Deputy Minister Mahlalela to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on tourism businesses in the Bojanala district

Deputy Minister of Tourism, Mr Fish Mahlalela accompanied by MEC for Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism (DEDECT) Mme Kenetswe Mosenogi and Executive Mayors from Bojanala District will visit the Bojanala Platinum District Municipality in the North West Province from 9 to 10 February 2021. The objective of the visit is to assess the impact of the covid-19 pandemic on the businesses in the tourism value chain.

Bojanala is the largest tourism hub within the province due the number of tourism attractions found in the area. The district accounts for 77% of the tourism investment value and 67% of tourism jobs in the province.

Due to the area being declared a Covid-19 hotspot, tourism activities have been restricted affecting the once bustling businesses in the area.

“The district has been negatively affected since the introduction of lockdown which resulted in the decline in tourism economic activities which include job losses, low revenue, investment depreciation and closure of some businesses, said Deputy Minister Mahlalela.

The Deputy Minister will visit various tourism establishments and interact with product owners in Madibeng and Moses Kotane Local Municipalities with the view of assessing how their businesses were affected by the pandemic and how all spheres of government can intervene by reviving them.
