BRICS Tourism Ministers’ Meeting

 BRICS Tourism Ministers’ Meeting

#BRICS4TourismZA – BRICS is a group of leading emerging markets and developing countries, namely Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. BRICS Leaders attended the XV BRICS Summit in Johannesburg from 22 to 24 August 2023.

Following this, South Africa will host the BRICS Tourism Ministers’ Meeting in Cape Town from 23 to 25 October 2023 under the theme: “Sustainable and inclusive tourism recovery”.

The Ministerial Meeting was preceded by two BRICS Tourism Senior Officials Meeting, the first one was held in hybrid format on 14 September 2023 in Pretoria and the second to be on 23 October 2023 in Cape Town immediately before the Ministerial Meeting.

As the chair of the BRICS Tourism Ministers’ Meeting for 2023, South Africa will provide an opportunity for exchange of information and experiences as well as deepen cooperation among BRICS Members to reach consensus on key policy priorities for a balanced tourism recovery.

Cooperation priorities for consideration at the meeting are as follows:

  • Mainstreaming sustainable policies and practices. Policy-makers, at all levels of government, should take additional steps to better support the transition to a green, low emissions and climate-resilient tourism economy.
  • Developing more sustainable tourism business models. Businesses and other key stakeholders have a key role to play by adopting eco-responsible practices for all sectors involved in the tourism value chain for tourism to have a positive impact on sustainability; and use technology to better manage visitor flows.
  • Reconsidering perceptions of tourism success. A paradigm shift in perceptions is required across all key stakeholders for a greater focus on environmental and socio-cultural pillars of sustainability.

In the interests of continuity of BRICS cooperation, strengthening intra-BRICS relations and developing mutually beneficial collaboration, the outcomes of the BRICS Tourism Ministers Meeting will contribute to the fulfilment of the objectives of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the recovery of tourism for economic growth and job creation in BRICS countries.

At the end of the meeting, BRICS Tourism Ministers will adopt an official communiqué which will be available www.tourism.gov.za.
