Gastronomy Tourism Framework

The Department of Tourism developed a framework to guide Gastronomy tourism in South Africa.

Gastronomy tourism is an activity that links the visitor’s experience with food, and culinary related products and activities. It reflects the culture, heritage, traditions of diverse people and communities. It has the potential to promote social cohesion and an understanding among cultures, whilst creating opportunities, including jobs, in remote tourism communities.

Crafted by a team comprising of hoteliers, hospitality professionals, chefs and academics, the Gastronomy Framework is poised to enhance the travel offerings in the domestic tourism market, while stimulating job creation,  transformation  and inclusion.

Aligned to the UNWTO Gastronomy objectives,  South Africa’s Gastronomy framework will:

  1. Assist destination(s) to identify local gastronomy/culinary products and experiences;
  2. Enable the development of promotional and marketing strategies and tools for the development of gastronomy/culinary tourism at local, provincial and national levels;
  3. Outline the requirements to ensure transformed and sustainable tourism economies through community development, poverty alleviation, and the empowerment of women and youth;
  4. Advise on the implementation plan to promote gastronomy tourism across the country.
