Blue Flag Training Programme

SA youth to graduate from the Blue Flag Training Programme

Minister Derek Hanekom and Deputy Minister Elizabeth Thabethe will officiate graduation ceremonies to honour learners who successfully completed Tourism’s Blue Flag Training Programme.

Implemented in partnership with Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA), the Blue Flag Training Programme capacitates unemployed youth as Beach Stewards to provide assistance in maintaining high standards of safety, environmental management, water quality and environmental education at Blue Flag sites.

In the 2016/17 financial year, the Department approved a budget of R39 600 000 to train 200 unemployed youth as Beach Stewards under its Blue Flag Training Programme. The 28-month programme sought to enhance tourism facilities and the services offered at 50 Blue Flag beaches located in the KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape and Western Cape Provinces.

Graduates will receive NQF level 5 certificates in Environmental Education Training and Development Practices, accredited by the Education, Training and Development Practices Sector Education and Training Authority (ETDP-SETA).
