Tourism Ministry condemns attacks on foreign nationals
Minister Derek Hanekom

Democratic South Africa is premised on respect for human rights and the rule of law. This foundation is inspired by its African values and an appreciation of the power of human solidarity, visibly demonstrated by all our friends across the world and in particular within the continent in our effort to end apartheid.

It is for this reason that South Africa condemns in the strongest possible terms, the recent attacks on foreign nationals. These attacks do not reflect the sentiments of the nation, whose reputation as a welcoming and hospitable people has earned global recognition. We pride ourselves on our rich cultural and natural diversity. It is deeply regrettable that such irresponsible and criminal conduct could still find its way in society.

We understand the concerns that may exist in some of our key tourism source markets. We would like to provide comfort to prospective visitors that tourism activity in the country remains unaffected. We are encouraged by the swift and decisive action from the criminal justice system to end this senseless behaviour.

It is through tourism that people of the world get to know and appreciate one another – after all, humanity know no boundaries. South Africa stands ready to welcome visitors to our country, where they will enjoy our hospitality and diversity.
