The safety of tourists and residents is one of the challenges facing destinations frequented by visitors. Acts of criminality against tourists have become a source of great concern and have a negative impact on the country's tourism potential, and affect the visitor experience envisaged by the National Tourism Sector Strategy.
The National Tourism Safety Forum (NTSF), a public-private sector initiative, meets quarterly in Gauteng and is responsible for establishing tourism safety protocol and the co-ordination and integration of safety response mechanisms for distressed tourists.
The Forum is chaired by the Department of Tourism and co-chaired by a nominated representative from the Forum members.
It comprises of representatives from the Department of Tourism, five Provincial Tourism Departments, South African Tourism, South African National Parks, Tourism Business Council of South Africa (TBCSA) and other tourism bodies, the South African Police Service, industry representatives, and other relevant stakeholders as per invitation from the Forum.
