Deputy Minister Thabethe to engage with youth from the OR Tambo Youth Exchange Programme
Deputy Minister Thabethe to engage with youth from the OR Tambo Youth Exchange Programme
As part of the Year of OR Tambo, 400 learners from Ekurhuleni Metro in Gauteng and OR Tambo District Municipality in Eastern Cape will get a first-hand experience of being a tourist when they participate in the OR Tambo School Exchange Programme.

Two hundred learners from Eastern Cape will travel to the OR Tambo Precinct in Ekurhuleni, while the same number will travel from Gauteng to the Mbizana Local Municipality to visit the birthplace of OR Tambo.  Following their travels, the children will engage with Deputy Minister Elizabeth Thabethe on their experiences on 2 October 2017.

The exchange programme will allow school children to explore and learn more about Oliver Tambo with the aim of fostering future tourism ambassadors and travellers.

The majority of the previously disadvantaged communities cannot afford to travel due to financial constraints, unavailability of packages for social tourism. It is based on this background that there is a need to promote social tourism objectives through awareness and educational trips for schools in order to promote the benefits of social tourism products.

It is upon this background that the National Department of Tourism partnered with OR Tambo District Municipality and the City of Ekurhuleni on the OR Tambo School Exchange Programme
