Minister of Tourism, Mr. Derek Hanekom, will address students and guests from the hospitality industry at a graduation ceremony for students who took part in the National Youth Chefs Training Programme (NYCTP) in Cape Town.
The National Youth Chefs Training Programme (NYCTP) is a youth skills development initiative of the Department of Tourism that aims to address the urgent need for cooks and chefs in South Africa’s growing hospitality industry. The Department collaborated with the South African Chefs Association (SACA) to design a programme that provides unemployed students with theoretical and practical culinary training.
Since its launch in 2011, more than 1,300 unemployed youth have completed the NYCTP programme with a certificate, diploma and advanced diploma - achieving a pass rate of 82%. To date, over 700 graduates have been received full-time employment in the tourism sector.
