​The Department of Tourism in partnership with Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) will host the 2015 Local Government Tourism Conference at Emperors Palace – Kempton Park.  Themed, “Tourism: A Catalyst for Local Economic Growth, Job Creation and Transformation,” the conference will provide a platform for public and private sector stakeholders to deliberate on how best to position tourism as a key economic sector that creates employment opportunities, and contributes to poverty alleviation as espoused in the National Development Plan (NDP).

Minister Derek Hanekom will open the conference, which will explore the current policy developments in tourism and their implications for local government; the state of domestic tourism in South Africa; transformation in the tourism sector; resourcing of tourism development and ways to enhance local government’s competitiveness.

Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) Minister, Mr Pravin Gordhan, will share insight on how the Back to Basics Programme, through the provision of catalytic infrastructure, can stimulate the local tourism economy.
